Every time I turn around, it seems something new has appeared, making extremely pleasing low-carb claims, whether it is a book, product, spokes- person, or what have you. The never-ending hit parade of all things low carb doesn’t seem to be coming to an end anytime soon. As a matter of fact, the business of low carb is escalating rapidly and without delay than the national deficit—not rather in the trillions of dollars, but unquestionably billions. For a long time I thought this was just a Dr. Stillman déjà-vu deal, until the flashback wouldn’t go away.

As the Dinner Diva of SavingDinner.com, I want to know what my subscribers want. A while back, I begun getting hit with a ton of requests for a more low-carb-friendly Menu-Mailer. The last straw came when one of my subscribers who had been with me from the beginning e-mailed me and told me that her husband had been diagnosed with diabetes. And yes, she asked the fatal question: Would I please do a more low-carb-friendly Menu-Mailer?

Like a lot of people, I believed the low-carb fad diets would hit the skids anytime soon, and I couldn’t wait. I pooh-poohed the idea and scoffed at the notion of those limiting their carbs. In my mind, eating low carb was eating bacon, eggs, and steaks. You call that healthy?

I did a little exploration and came across going low carb didn’t need to look like steak for each meal. Quite the contrary—it could be a life style of potpourri and flavor, could genuinely integrate vegetables, and be straightout healthy. In the meantime, I tried going low carb myself. Not only did I feel better and more satiated, while eating less food, but I begun to read and read numerous more on the actual, real-life, not-manufactured-for-your-viewing-pleasure science. There in truth is something behind this low-carb phenomenon. It is here to stay, and I’m very glad it is. I guess you could say that I’m a believer.

In August 2003, I realized this was something stimulating and introduced my basi Low-Carb Menu-Mailer (for more selective information on Menu-Mailer, go to www.savingdinner.com). I realize now, more than a year later, that low carb isn’t a diet; it’s a modus vivendi and it is here to stay.

It is in that spirit that I offer you the next Saving Dinner book. While the recipes are low carb (and that is 10 or less net grams of carbs for the entrée—not counting the Serving Suggestions), there are sure members of your household who aren’t going to want to do low carb all the way, so there are regular, non-low-carb Serving Suggestions offered as well for that person or persons. You don’t have to make two dinners so you may low carb it, while the kids eat a regular, non-low-carb meal. Isn’t that great?

Just as the firstborn Saving Dinner book offered you the recipes, menus, and buying goods lists divvied up by weeks and seasons, so does this book. I think this is the way to go in today’s world—having the hard work of menu planning already done and ready to go. You don’t need to schlep your book to the grocery store and take a probability on losing it.

A huge caveat to those who may be following sure low-carb diets with huge lists of do’s and don’ts. This book does not cohere to any one low-carb diet plan. It’s just low carb, end of story. You won’t find oddball ingredients like pork rinds, weird ketosis-inducing, low-carb mixes made with strange things you’ve never heard of. I use regular ingredients and admittedly, I’ve been skewered for it. People have written utterly unprintable e-mails denouncing my low-carb ideas because I had the audacity to add 1 tablespoon of whole-wheat flour to a recipe—even though I’ve kept the recipe very low carb. Apparently, in their eyes I’ve consecrated the carbinal sin (get it?) by using huge no-no ingredients.

But the issue in my mind, is keeping the recipes low carb (they are) and using real ingredients, effortlessly accessible and found at just when it comes to any market, to carry out this goal. I’ve held unfeigned to this principle for years: that the more natural and real your ingredients are, the posing no difficulty it is to accomplish and keep up as a lifestyle.

There are two types of Serving Suggestions in the book: LC (low carb) and just Serving Suggestions (regular ones for non-low- carbing family members). The Serving Suggestions are asterisked on the grocery lists because I don’t want you to feel roped in by any of my suggestions. However, the LC Serving Suggestions are not asterisked, as I am attempting to aid you put together a complete, low-carb meal.

I would strongly suggest that you read the recipes before you hit the grocery store each week with the list. It helps to know what your menu is in regards to before you head out the door. That five minutes of reading through the menu and recipes may support you make a quick decision if your store is out of something or if you would prefer a substitute. You can’t do that if you don’t know what you’re buying goods for!

This book is chock full of sidebars . . . read them! There is a ton of info to help you take full vantage of these menus and to make the recipes your own. As I was writing these recipes out, I would think of something else that would empower you in the kitchen, so I made a sidebar out of it. The more you know, the more quickly you’re competent to do the recipes and shopping. That’s a good thing!

When appropriate, I have added Do-Ahead Tips to support make dinner requiring little effort the next day (e.g., precooking turkey or chicken for a salad, etc.). However, there are all kinds of things you may do the day before, if you so desire. I held it basic, you might want to do more—it’s altogether up to you. You also may move days around if you want—just do not forget that the Do-Ahead Tips may no longer be suitable if you do.

If you do want to make substitutions (due to allergies, preferences, etc.) on a great deal of of the grocery items, feel free! For those who are more kosher minded, the pork and shellfish recipes may effortlessly be substituted out with any poultry, chicken being a very easy fit.

Just remember, Saving Dinner the Low-Carb Way is another weapon in your arsenal to aid you conquer the drive-thru and keep your family at the dinner table. Enjoy! SAVING

DAY ONE: Sweet Teriyaki Pork Chops

SHOPPING LIST

MEAT

4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves

1 pound beef flank steak

4 boneless pork chops (4–6 ounces each)

11/2 pounds boneless pork (cut into 1-inch cubes)

1 pound ground turkey

1 pound cod fillets (if not using frozen, other firm white fish may be applied instead)

CONDIMENTS

olive oil

sesame oil (dark; now and again called toasted; comes in a little bottle)

teriyaki sauce

soy sauce (low sodium, if available)

ketchup

honey

vinegar

**lc salad dressing—your choice

PRODUCE

1 little green bell pepper

1 little red bell pepper

1/2 pound snow-pea pods

2 bunches green onions (you’ll need 1/2 cup + 4 teaspoons)

3 pounds onions (keep on hand)

2 medium tomatoes

1 head garlic

1 piece gingerroot (you’ll need 1 tablespoon grated)

1 bag spinach (you’ll need 4 cups); **lc (1 meal)

red cabbage (you’ll need 3 cups)

**lc 2 heads lettuce (not iceberg) (2 meals)

**lc salad veggies (2 meals)

**lc spaghetti squash (1 meal)

**lc green beans (1 meal)

**lc turnip (1 meal)

**lc broccoli (1 meal)

**lc cauliflower (1 meal)

**lc pumpkin wedges (purchase a little pie pumpkin or sugar pumpkin) (1 meal)

**russet potatoes (1 meal)

**red potatoes (2 meals)

CANNED GOODS

1 141/2-ounce may chicken broth (you’ll need 1/2 cup)

1 jar salsa (you’ll need 3/4 cup)

black olives (you’ll need 1/4 cup chopped)

apple juice (you’ll need 4 tablespoons, if not using bourbon)

**black beans SPICES

garlic powder

basil

paprika

caraway seed

DAIRY/DAIRY CASE

butter

half-and-half (you’ll need 1/2 cup)

sour cream (you’ll need 4 tablespoons + 1/2 cup)

Cheddar cheese (you’ll need 1 cup shredded)

4I have no time to spare and this book is a WINNER for me!

Making the adjustment to low carb has meant learning a whole new way to cook. Before I ran into this book, other recipes I’ve tried have been bland or required too much prep time.
Not this one. From the very original page, I was competent to hit the ground running, since the book comes compete with WEEKLY buying goods lists and recipes that take a short time to throw together but taste like they’ve taken all day to cook. We enjoyed Cube steaks with onion gravy, Thai Shrimp, Skillet Chicken Mediterranean and more.
Don’t be frighted by the “exotic” sounds of galore of the recipes. This is family cooking, NOT something that you could only eat if you had the most refined of palates. If your kids aren’t fish lovers, you might want to keep galore simple number of things from which only one can be chosen on hand but on most nights, they will have to be competent to eat the same menu as the “Low carbers”.
ONE caveat – Some of the recipes are designed for a crockpot. I don’t have one and I found it simple to adjust the cooking times. It was no huge deal. But do keep in mind that at least one recipe a week is designed for a crockpot. Again, this wasn’t a huge deal to me, even without one.
In each other way, the book is perfective for our needs and we’ve branched out into newer, better recipes than before. Thanks, Leanne!

5A REALISTIC way to low-carb it

Leanne Ely has done it again! She provides outstanding family friendly recipes that are healthful and yummy! You will never feel deprived eating like this. No hard-to-find high-priced ingredients here – it’s real feed for real people. Even those not fascinated in low-carb will gain from this book. With each recipe, she provides serving suggestions for those who aren’t giving up carbs. I highly recommed this book!

5Great Concept, Best Low Carb Book I have Seen

I purchased this book along with Saving Dinner and Saving Dinner for the Holidays last year.

I LOVE the conception of having the on a weekly basis menu planned out as well as the grocery list put together and ready for shopping. We went through the entire book and I have to say, it actually broadened our feed horizons as we had been stuck in a rut for a long time with our regular foods. Also, the books actually did eliminate a lot of stress by permitting me to recognise in advance “What’s for dinner” and be ready to prepare it.

The only cons I may think of would be that the feed is not incisively kid friendly, and you will need to be an open minded eater. If you have a lot of people with finicky predilections in your household, this may not be the book for you. Also, our grocery bill for two went up from in regards to $75 a week to $125 because of the veggies and meats. Good, healthful quality feed ingredients, but unfortunately, painful to the wallet.

That said, I have NEVER seen a low carb book out there that compares to this one, the feed is good, the potpourri is there, and it takes the low carb life style above and beyond “bunless burgers” and eggs and bacon.

Overall, I would commend Leanne’s Saving Dinner books. For the open minded foodie. Or for those weeks that you just want to not worry in regards to dinner and the grocery list. These books are great to have and do offer a good assortment of recipes to broaden horizons while removing galore stress.

We all recognise how glorious those primary warm days of spring feel. The trees are blooming, the birds are singing… boy, it’s sure hard to keep your head out of the clouds when the skies are blue and the sun’s shining brightly.

But if you’re outside enjoying the warm weather… who’s running your business?

Spring fever is a notorious distractor for those of us attempting to earn a living on our own. There’s no stern manager telling us we’d better hurry back from lunch. There’s no one to stop us from cutting out early and cruising down to the local outdoor restaurant, slipping on our jogging shoes and heading off to the park, or venturing over to the mall for a reckless afternoon of buying goods for spring fashions. So with no Big Brother to scold us, how may a freelancer keep springtime distractors from affecting productivity? Here are seven tips.

1. Shift your schedule forward or back a couple of hours. If you ordinarily sit down to work at 9 a.m., undertake getting up a couple of hours earlier. You may wind down at with regards to 3 p.m. and have the afternoon/evening for yourself. Or, if you’re not a morning person, ease into your day with a great deal of mindless activities; spend galore time out of doors. Settle down to business at when it comes to 11 a.m. and work through to 7 pm. While you’re doing this, do not forget all those poor nine-to-fivers who can’t get enjoyment from such a flexible schedule!

2. Break up your work day into sections. Feeling blocked, and/or restless? Don’t fight it. Sitting there for hours attempting to get things accomplished when you just can’t concentrate is only going to make the problem worse. Spend a couple of hours doing work, and then if you need to, take numerous time out to clear your head. Chances are, when you return, you’ll be primed for productivity. And don’t forget that now and again the greatest ideas are born when the sun goes down!

3. Take a vacation. Sometimes you just have to give your body what it’s asking for: a rest! If work is overpowering you to the point that you just want to get in your car and drive away, then perchance that’s what you ought to do. Even just a few days away from the computer will do wonders for your mind, body and spirit. Take a long weekend for a scenic retreat. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel when you get back!

4. Start setting goals on paper. If you aren’t doing this already, the spring season is a great time to get into the habit of setting practical goals. Having that list you may check off is a in truth handy way to be efficient. It’s sort of like being in the grocery store when you aren’t in the mood to go shopping! Write down the things you need to accomplish and set a completion date (or time) for each task. Set little goals over the course of a work week, and larger goals over a span of a month or two. Refer back to your list frequently, and don’t forget to reward yourself for your accomplishments. You’ll soon come to realize: goal-setting genuinely helps keep you on track!

5. Designate a time to check email. How a lot of times have you set your mind to a task only to find you’ve lost an entire hour because you made the fault of checking email? Email is by far the biggest time waster, peculiarly when the weather is warm and everyone’s preoccupied with frivolity. Don’t give in to the temptation! Instead, designate two or three hours of your day to checking and responding to emails as well as deleting old ones that take up space in your mailbox. And NO, that forward your Aunt Millie sent does not count as a work-related email!

6. Take it outside. Who says you have to sit in a dark room staring at the monitor for 9 hours straight? If the weather is balmy, why not receive pleasure from it while at the same time keeping busy! Print out your documents, grab a beach chair and choose a nice, quiet spot where you may work quietly and get enjoyment from the warm sunshine. Don’t forget a paperweight of numerous kind in case the wind picks up!

7. Do some spring cleaning. Sometimes, the best way to rid your mind of clutter is to rid your workspace of clutter. Grab the paper shredder, go through those old dusty files and clear away all that needless paperwork you’ll never use again. Organize your office so that everything you need is within reach, such as paper clips, folders, pens, pads; and of course, your Springline stapler. Junk those useless computer files littering your computer desktop. Take a trip to Staples for a Rolodex and a heap of stacking file holders. Once you’re done reorganizing, you may in the end get down to business!

    I ordered the Bee Lucious quad in Naturalist on 3/19 largely because of one of your tutorials and even paid for priority shipping because I was so excited to try it. It is now 3/25 and not only have I not received it but I haven’t even gotten an email telling me it’s shipped. I emailed them but received no response. I googled the co. and found TONS of complaints (many on ur blog) of people saying they were charged for the products but didn’t receive them. Have u had any problems with them?

I was so excited that I paid extra for priority shipping, yet I still haven’t received any email from the company telling me my product has shipped. I got worried after emailing the company and receiving no response, so I googled them and found a TON of complaints (many on ur blog) from customers who were charged for products they didn’t receive. Have u ever had a problem with them?

    Emily, I definitely have spring fever! I tried Liquif’eye & it goes on so smoothly that the 1st time I used it I had too bold of line. I am used to pencils that don’t apply that much product. I love it! They had black & silver at my Kmart & I bought both–Kmart had a sale–buy 1, get 1 free. What a deal! I am going to get Jordana glosses next time I go to Walgreen’s. That is a great price.     hey Emily gretat video! I have a question about the lotion/gel. Would you be able to wear it out in the sun. For example if you are going to tan or have a lot of sun exposure would it be okay to wear the lotion?
